FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

AS THE SERENADE ENTERS
IT'S THIRD YEAR...

Yes, this issue marks the first entry in Volume 3 of the newsletter. The success of the effort is directly related to the willingness of fans to step up and contribute.

I’d like to offer many thanks to all those people who have contributed thus far, and extend an invitation to all those who have thought about contributing.  You can do it, trust me. Everyone has a story to tell and a unique perspective on BTE and their music. All are welcome.

Special shoutouts go to the good people who provided reviews, articles, and photos from the New Orleans and Atlanta Mardi Gras shows and to Pauly from Australia who contributed another of his great "What Lurks Below" columns. I think you'll agree these folks did one heck of a job.

Some Special Content for Our Readers

As there haven’t been many shows of late, we’ve tried to add some unique content to this edition. Have you ever wondered what BTE was like back in the day? Well, you can find out as ChrisK interviews Robert Vaughn, the recording engineer on the band’s 1990 cassette-only release, Surprise. He has some interesting memories of those early sessions at Bayou Breeze Studios.

In the same vein, this edition’s Bootlog reviews of one of the best sounding early live recordings, the September 18th, 1993 show at New Orleans’ Howlin’ Wolf. The show had an impressive setlist, including some acoustic songs, and is well worth collecting.

Our Cup Runneth Over

After almost a four year wait, the band are set to release their new CD, entitled Before the Robots, on April 12, 2005. And if you can’t wait that long, you don’t have to! The Greatest Hits disc will be released March 12. Of course, this presumes you have time to pick it up when you’re not enjoying the Live at the House of Blues, New Orleans DVD and live CD. Times are good for Ezralites, aren’t they?

And the first single off the new CD, the remixed "A Lifetime," is hitting radio as we speak. Call your favorite station and let them know you want to hear it (now).

Cheers,

EnglishDave

MARDI GRAS 2005: THE SHOWS, THE PARADES, AND MUCH MORE

Better than Ezra were in fine form at the 2005 Mardi Gras shows, first in New Orleans and then in Atlanta.  And let's not forget all the good people listening in to the New Orleans webcast.  But Mardi Gras is more than Ezra concerts.  It's about all the sights and sounds and activities of the season.  And we've tried to include a bit of each in this issue.

Our coverage begins at Tipitina's.  The review is in the interesting style of a fictitious radio interview (lest you think it's real!):

MARDI GRAS MEMORIES
By Bolony7

Alrighty. You’re listening to WINO here in New Orleans, Louisiana. I’m Bud from the Breakfast Brew Crew, and we are on our 5th day of talking with some of our residents about their Mardi Gras memories. The station manager has given me the special privilege of having his great uncle Markus LeBon visit our show this hour.

Bud: Welcome to our show Mr. LeBon!
LeBon:
Peanut.
Bud:
(confused) Noo thank you.
LeBon:
No son! Call me Peanut. The ladies love sayin’ it!
Bud:
Oookay. Well how about telling us about one of your Mardi Gras memories.
LeBon:
There was one time I was with Ida Mae Johnson. Now she had some big…
Bud:
Whoa! It may be 3 am, but there are a couple of people listening. How about some other experience?
LeBon:
Well I don’t know why ya wouldn’t want to hear about Ida’s big gumbo pots… Uh… Can’t talk about Gene Simmons, the King Cake, and the limo on account of the confidentiality clause… Land sakes I got one!
Bud:
Delay button armed.
LeBon:
What’s that?
Bud:
Nothing. Please proceed.

LeBon: Well, there is this band that I love to see, called Better Than Ezra. BET fuh short.
Bud: Shouldn’t that be BTE?
LeBon: Don’t interrupt me son. Now Bee Tee Eeee, was known for putting on incredible live shows. And their Mardi Gras shows…Hooo Weee! Now them shows were legendary! Folks would spend hundreds of dollars to come see a show at Tipitina’s. The tickets only cost around $20, but after payin’ all them Ticketmaster fees, you was outta a couple hundred bucks! (More on page 2).
