HOW BTE STOLE SPRINGFEST
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004
by AmEmPbdy & Bolony7.

In honor of one of Charlottesville’s most famous residents, we decided to write this in his style. Dr. Seuss and the Wahoos of UVA, this one’s for you!

All the Hoos down in C-Ville like BTE a lot
So on April 3rd they all gathered in the same spot
Springfest ’04 was the place for Ezralites to be
Great music, great food and best of all it was free
Madison Bowl was the site of this celebration day
It’s located prominently on the campus of UVA

First up The Wailers entertained the mob
And they got the crowd jamming with the spirit of Bob
They claimed they sent away the clouds threatening rain
Bringing sun from Jamaica and a hint of Mary Jane
From “Buffalo Soldier” to “No Woman No Cry”
They delivered an amazing set and a swell contact high
It’s their amazing musicianship that sets them apart from their peers
That’s why they’ve been world renowned for the last 30 years

Better than Ezra opened their set with “Misunderstood”
Then followed that up with the smash hit “Good”
Kevin was full of energy that was difficult to gauge
It must have been the two cups of “iced tea” up there on the stage
And we all know KG can sometimes be a ham,
We saw this when he said they were partying with the Tri-Lambs
“Where’s Booger?” he yelled across the avenue
Probably out hanging with the Omega Mu’s
The show continued with a song a lot of us miss
“Allison Foley” made its triumphant return to the
set list
Suddenly there was an event that wasn’t commonplace
Technical difficulties made us lose Tom’s bass
Then Kevin’s mic went totally out
The crowd was wondering, “What’s this all about?”
Travis lost his drums, Jim lost his Rhodes
It all just compounded the road crew’s woes
It wasn’t for very long, the sound was back in a flash
Thanks to Brian, Mike, Kenny and their amazing panache

The weather had been iffy, so everyone came prepared
But Travis made us all seem very style impaired
The unexpected warmth made everyone lose layers
And Travis lost his with the grace of a true player
The denim jacket was the first thing to go
Revealing an Adidas track jacket hidden below
That soon gave way to a long sleeve shirt
Travis proved he was ultra-cool and a layering expert
But that shirt gave way to a look that was very low-key
The final layer was his classic West Virginia motorcycle tee
“Rolling” was next featuring James Arthur Payne
Proving that he is the master of his musical domain
Kevin said Jim has 11 fingers and that’s the reason why
He can play the difficult piano solo that’s guaranteed to satisfy
“Extraordinary” was the next song up to bat
And a falsetto “Ms. Jackson” made the ending especially phat
Before the next song, Tom had some insight that he shared with the masses
He said “Having a few beers and hanging out with friends is as important as studying and going to classes”
Kevin chuckled and asked in his perfected deadpan
“Tom, do you want me to be your wingman?”

Then they told stories of Mardi Gras revelry
Partying with the hobbits known as Pippin and Merry
It was at Harry Connick Jr’s Lundi Gras Bash
They all ended up on stage singing “Jumping Jack Flash”
Even though Kevin demonstrated them all taking a puff
He assured us all that his actions were only a bluff
This provided a segue way to the song about their hometown
And “King of New Orleans” was definitely not a letdown
Everyone in the crowd rocked out to the tune
But the breakdown with “Debra” made all the ladies swoon

KG then treated us to a “classic rock medley”
Zeppelin and Rush provided the hits from the 70’s
Then came a performance of “Rosealia” featuring
Jim coming up to sing the traditional ending
This reminded them all of an amazing fact
It had been 10 years since Deluxe hit the racks
“I realize some of you were still nursing back then and some of you still are…”
KG joked before he realized he may have taken it too far. Afterwards Kevin took a moment to recognize co-national champion LSU
And was immediately greeted with a chorus of boos
He just shrugged and ignored the almost unanimous dissent
Asking the crowd to “give us our moment”

To make up for his misstep, the crowd was given a treat
They played “In A Little While” and did it ever sound sweet!
Then “A Lifetime” made them all sing-along
It’s amazing how many people have been touched by that song
This was when Tom hinted at a touchy subject
Where was the DVD they’d kept telling us to expect?
“It’s coming out soon…” was all he would say
Maybe we should all let sleeping dogs lay?

At this point Tom asked the crowd if Aaron Brooks played there before he went pro
Kg mumbled, “He was probably better when he played here” because the Saints have a long way to go
Then it was time for “At the Stars” and its very melancholy chord
That KG said uses a Loudon Wainwright song as its baseboard
During the trippy breakdown, KG did something that made us scratch our heads
Dave Matthews sings the Grateful Dead?!
“Friend of the Devil” as sung by Charlottesville’s favorite son
We roared with laughter because the imitation was so well done

Then it was time for “This Time of Year”
Signaling that audience participation was very near
KG sung a little of “The Whole World” by Outkast
Then guest guitarist Dan was finally cast
When Kevin saw Dan’s identical shirt he almost flipped
“Dude, you copped my Urban Outfitters vibe” he teasingly quipped
Wrapping his arm around Dan and with a very wry grin
KG commanded, “take a picture of me and my twin”
He knew the chords and was allowed to stay
Enabling Kevin to come off stage and play
He said hello, he shook hands and one other thing
He coerced some shy audience members to sing

Dan was good but he got a little carried away
And that provoked Kevin to say
“I’ll cut your ass off. I still have the power…”
Dan forgot he only got 5 minutes not the whole hour
KG told the crowd that they had a show the next day
In San Antonio, Texas and they were leaving right away
They encouraged everyone there to come along and crash it
VIP status was just one of the benefits
One particular concertgoer shouted, “Can we ride with you?”
Kevin told them “yes” and described what they should do
“Look for a green Honda Civic with Texas or Bust painted on the back window…” he replied
Knowing full well all those people wouldn’t fit in that ride

KG shared a song that as a child he’d listened to
“Sedated” was a folk song by the Mamas and the Papas? Who knew?
That rolled right into “Sincerely, Me”
And as he drummed Travis grooved and got a little funky
“Desperately Wanting” was the last song of the night
It featured a cover of “Ride Wit Me” that was more than all right

Suddenly the show was over, but the crowd wanted more
Alas, it was 6:30 so there could be no encore
No “Recognize” or “In the Blood” this night
Our warriors of rock had a 7am flight
In a green Honda Civic, they were carted away
If you listened close you could hear them say
“The Hoo’s have been rocked, they chanted our name…
…now let’s hurry home to watch the game!”

The End!

Ladies, thanks so much for a very creative and fun review.
