THE VARSITY SESSIONS (PART II)
Friday, Day Two (Recording Starts) Am: So here we are outside of the Varsity after enjoying the second dose of our BTE double shot. B7: Tonight’s sold-out show proved yet again that these guys have one of the best live shows around. Am: It definitely capped a fantastic weekend here in Baton Rouge! An old friend of the band, Graham Colton performed a solo acoustic set to kick off the evening’s festivities. He repeatedly let the crowd know how nervous he was because it had been a very long time since he’d performed without the support of his band. B7: But don’t feel too bad for Graham. He had a very energetic cheering section that included both Kevin Griffin and Jim Payne hiding in the shadows backstage for most of his set where he played 3 of the songs from his new album that were co-written by Kevin Griffin.
Am: The BTE set began with the most requested non-album tracks, “Hollow” which was quickly followed by an energetic performance of last night’s opener, “Pull” and then “Good”. B7: Next up, we were introduced to two infamous ladies, “Allison Foley” and “Rosealia”. During “Rosealia”, the crowd was treated to a rare drum solo from the very talented Travis McNabb. Am: The man plays the drums during that song at well over 120 beats per minute. He is awesomely talented! The guys slowed things down a bit after that by easing into “Live Again” to give Travis a break. “Extraordinary” put him right back to work afterwards. B7: Then Tom took a moment to tell the crowd that the eagerly anticipated Live CD and DVD were on sale at the merchandise table. He also mentioned that they would be flying to Los Angeles in the coming weeks to mix the new studio album due in the spring of 2005. Am: The guys went back to rocking the crowd with “King of New Orleans” and “Misunderstood”, but after that we were all in for an extra special treat! B7: That’s right, Am. The multitalented James Arthur Payne performed a solo cover of a Johnny Cash song. |
Am: Is there anything Jim can’t do? B7: I don’t think so. He’s making me a Payne-Point tapestry for my living room. Am: Lucky you! Next, BTE got the crowd jumping with the head banging “Recognize”. B7: KG told the crowd that Jim Payne was really excited about the LSU game on Saturday and had started the celebration early. Then it was time for their foggy car window song, “At the Stars”. Am: And boy was the crowd in for a shock when Graham Colton came out to sing the song with the band. Graham is known for performing "At the Stars" with BTE at shows the two bands have done together. It was a real treat to see him sit in! B7: We also learned something about Tom after the song. Kevin informed the crowd that we were looking at the World Frisbee Golf Champion Tom Drummond! Am: Our congratulations go out to Tom!
B7: “Allison Foley” was next but then the crowd got another surprise when BTE launched into the Graham Colton Band song, “Cigarette” complete with Graham! Am: “Cigarette” was co-written by Kevin and it was very cool to hear them perform the song together. B7: That it was! They kept the crowd moving with “In the Blood” and even invited a guest singer up on stage with them. When it became obvious that he only knew the first verse, Kevin fed him the rest of the lyrics and made him do an old school soft shoe tap dance for the crowd. Am: BTE closed out the show with “Sincerely, Me” and it definitely capped a fantastic weekend here in Baton Rouge! B7: Well that about wraps up our Street Serenade coverage of the Varsity shows, I’m Bolony7 reminding you to recognize! Am: And I’m AmEmPbdy saying good night to Ezralites everywhere! (Recording Stops) Ladies, thank you once again for 2 incredible and original reviews. You're great supporters of the Serenade. |
