THE BOOTLOG:
BTE AT THE BELLY UP

This bootleg recording ranks right up there with the best of them for a number of reasons.

Although this is officially the second night of the Closer tour, this the first recording from the tour.   And a great recording it is too in terms of both quality and content.  The guys make a few technical mistakes as you would expect on the second night of a tour, but it's actually very refreshing to hear a more raw rendition of several tunes from the then new album (especially the title track "Closer," "Recognize" and "Briefly.")

The guys were in good spirits this evening too. During the "King of New Orleans" breakdown, KG notes that the previous night was the start of the tour proper, but that (sarcastically) "every night feels like the first night of the tour!"

In addition to a kick-ass set list, the show contains some serious BTE funnies.  There's KG dissing the now chubby Axl Rose.  For some reason KG both admires and picks on Rose. Either way, KG summons Axl's spirit several times during the show, like when he instructs the crowd in the rock 'n' roll thankyou.

Kevin also does a rare impression of NOLA rapper Mystikal. According to KG, BTE and the rapper were scheduled to play together (M.O.M. alert folks!).

And let's not forget the the unforgettable moment when Kevin knocks his mic stand onto an unsuspecting fans head.  His apology, though heartfelt, is pretty darn funny.

The guys are also obviously excited for their upcoming appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  Kevin promises the crowd that he was planning a special nod to them and he did just that (see picture).  The major guest on the show was American Pie's Jason Biggs.  Tom said he was looking forward to asking him all about the pie (including what flavor it was!).

As for covers, the guys throw out some Madonna, The Police, Men at Work and The Smiths.  This was one of the first shows where "Don't Tell Me" by Madonna was worked into "Extra Ordinary."  While this cover became a temporary feature of many shows, it is very rare for the band to cover The Police.

After a discussion on the features of the board game "Mousetrap," Travis starts a beat that leads Kevin to kick into The Police's "Message in a Bottle."  Tom then gets into the act by providing the bass line to "Walking on the Moon."  And then the show goes to total awry with an off kilter cover of Men at Work's "Land Down Under."

The encore begins with a particularly raw version of "Recognize" with the original "picking style" introduction which preceded the "rock" introduction that fans hear at current shows.

As Kevin is introducing "Sincerely Me" as the composite song about Tom's stalkers he segues into a description of Tom's wardrobe.  Tom's penchant for wearing black is discussed.  KG then observes that Morrissey would agree that "you wear black on the inside because that's how you feel on the outside" (notice how he switched inside and outside?).  Anyway, The Smiths' cover "Sweetness" results from this repartee.  And the show closes out with the aforementioned "Sincerely Me" and  "In the Blood."

All things considered this is one of the great BTE bootlegs.  Go find it!!
