BTE KICKS IT UP IN THE
"SHOW ME" STATE
Chesterfield, MO
Sunday, September 5th, 2004
by Ezra Jen

This show was somewhat of the festival-length.  I don't particularly remember much of the banter between the guys except for the DVD date being mentioned and Kevin's silly singing about carnivals (as he did in Palatine not so long before).

Like most of the BTE shows I have been to, though, there are a few memories I will always cherish from from the evening -- i.e., hay bales, Tom-screaming preteens, a TTOY encore with a guest guitarist, and the opportunity to say hello and get pictures with each of my favorite rock trio.

Hay Bales

Basically, instead of folding chairs, there were hay bales all over the place to sit on to watch the band.  The opening band  replaced Sister Hazel who couldn't make the gig because of the hurricanes.  Between their set and BTE, concert goers passed some of the bales down to the right of the stage to make room for more fans to stand closer to the stage. This cooperation worked out surprisingly well.

The Tom-Screaming Preteens

This was so cute, yet quite a hoot at the same time!  A couple of songs into the set list, about a dozen young, female junior high and/or high school underclassmen started to go mad for Tom Drummond.  I think it really kept his energy going.  He was smiling during the whole show.

The girls kept even screaming "Tom, Tom" during "This Time of Year" and KG's accompanying antics! There were some points during this time where Tom really wasn't doing anything but watching KG like anyone else in the crowd.  Nevertheless, the preteen troops kept screaming for Tom and holding their hands out to him.

After the show, Tom was busy signing their cell phones, arms, purses, clothes, and, of course, providing hugs and "thank yous."  One gal asked him if he was married.  Another asked if he realized that they "were the people screaming 'Tom, Tom' in the front during the show" all night long.  Tom took all this attention in his stride, as usual.

The TTOY Encore

I would be interested in learning if any other show has ended like this night before.  I'm thinking it's virtually unheard of for BTE to end a show with "This Time of Year" with a guest guitarist.  This night his name was Kurt, and he did a great job.  The show ended with him jumping off the riser and walking offstage together with the band.

After the show, I was lucky to get a really great picture with Kevin.  I also got one with Tom and one with Travis.  And Tom confirmed that there would still be two back-to-back Chicago House of Blues shows in November!  It had been a couple of years perhaps since I got to see all three band members at once after a show and this was a great end to the eveneing's entertainment.. The other Ezralites and I really appreciated all the time they spent signing. Thanks again, guys!
