SALISBURY STATE (CONT'D)

Before "Extra Ordinary" KG complimented the crowd on surviving Hurricane Isabel the previous week. The song was well received by the crowd and featured the KG stationary "butt shaking maneuver." The female concertgoers seemed to appreciate the move.... And the song concluded with a soulful "Ms. Jackson" snippet.

"King of New Orleans" came next with a nod to "Ezekiel." Fans were treated to a classic "Debra" breakdown complete with the "fruit picking sound" and an unexpected "Salisbury State University" reference. Did Debra or Jenny graduate from SSU? I wonder... The rhythm section moment again demonstrated the rocking skills of Messrs. McNabb and Drummond. It was at this point that some pretty considerable crowd-surfing broke out. Luckily no one got hurt, but a couple of fans were visibly vexed by having to watch both their fronts (the show) and their backs (the crowd-surfers). Luckily, this activity did not persist throughout the show.

KG took a break at the end of the KONO to "raise a toast of grain alcohol" (actually a non-alcoholic beverage) to the crowd. "Rosealia" came next and finished up with the "traditional" ending. Tom tried to give Jim Payne a swift kick in the pants as he exited the front of the stage...

Travis new "quote of the day" followed. According to Travis: "With Salisbury Steak you get mashed po-tat-ties, but with Salisbury State, you get the fine ladies." KG and Tom cracked up at this and gave Travis props for being able to rhyme "ladies" and "pot-tat-ties." Salisbury student – and concert organizer – Rohry Flood says that students seemed to particularly enjoy this quote and that it seems like half of them have since put it in their computer profiles!

An unexpected "In a Little While" followed with some slight lyric changes. Rockers "A Lifetime" and "Hollow" came next in quick succession. During "At the Stars" Kevin challenged Tom to come on over to his side of the stage. Tom dutifully sidled on over and showed the crowd his now legendary "Crawfish" dance move... (You have to see this sometime!). Then, Mr. Payne took the crowd on "String Cheese Panic" and "Widespread Incident" trip...

"Sedated" served as the introduction to "Sincerely Me." The guys couldn’t decide how to end the song, so they did alternate endings. First, KG and Travis kicked into some Rush (the "Spirit of Radio" intro). Next they tried Led Zeppelin ("Ocean") and finally Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Sweet Home Alabama"). The band ended their set with a cranked-up version of "Desperately Wanting."

When the guys came out for the encore, it was time to say "Happy Birthday" to Kevin. Before the show maybe 50 or so people signed a giant birthday card that was left at the venue ticket table. As the encore began, it was passed up on stage and KG opened it up. He seemed genuinely surprised at how many signatures there were and where people were from. He put the card up on his guitar amp and seemed to study it little bit as he played.

An all too brief, yet satisfying encore followed. It began with a snippet of a brand new song called "Avalanche." It’s the same sort of musical beginning that fans saw with "In a Little While." Pretty soon that little snippet has grown into a full-blown song. It sounds just great. The band concluded what turned out to be a very good show with the ever-rocking "In the Blood."

As the guys left the stage, they made sure to give some major props to Rohry Flood. So what does Rohry have to say about the show and the students reaction to BTE? "The night of, the day after, and two weeks later I am still being thanked for bringing Better Than Ezra to Salisbury. I knew that they would be well received by the school. They have such an incredible stage presence. I couldnt have asked for anything more from the band or my school."

Rohry was very surprised to get a special thank you. "During the show the band thanked me while onstage. It was a pretty intense feeling, but I have to admit that none of this would have been possible without Heather Holmes, another Ezralite who has helped me out with a lot since I have been in college. And the student volunteers wearing those snazzy green BTE shirts busted their butts all day to make sure the show went off without a hitch."

The SERENADE agrees, Rohry. Thanks so much to you and all the other students for your hard work and hospitality! Check out the setlist here.
