Amanda

How and when did you become a BTE fan?
I bought Deluxe in '96 and been a fan ever since!

Where was your most memorable live show, and why was it so good (uh-huh)?
Well, Bonne Fete was pretty memorable because there were hundreds of drunk people wandering around and it was my first one. Harborfest was memorable because I was with a bunch of raging Ezralites!

What's the best live BTE song? And your favorite cover?
"At The Stars"...Too many covers to name :)

Are you a bootleg collector? What's your favorite?
Not really....I don't have the cash...;)

Which BTE opening band would you recommend and why?
Cowboy Mouth....They're great live!

What other bands do you really like?
Third Eye Blind, Blues Traveler, Matchbox 20, Dave Matthews Band.

Which BTE song do you request (if any) to be played live?
Hung the Moon....Even though it never happens!

Thank you for telling us a little bit about yourself Amanda.

GLOBAL BTE:
BAND NAME ATTRACTS IRISH FAN

Editor's Note:  This edition of the SERENADE features a profile of Ronan Murphy, an Irish Ezralite, and the story of how he came to be a BTE fan.

Irish Fan Ronan Murphy

Hey, I'm Ronan Murphy. I'm one of BTE's only Irish fans (Yes, that Ireland, the one with all the leprechauns). I would be Ireland's only BTE fan, but there are a few more of them now, due to my passing around of the CDs (I neglect to see the "Unauthorized Lending Warning on the back of CDs).

But how did I get into Ezra? Well I can't really remember exactly myself, but I know it was when I was surfing Yahoo Music (back before it was Launch), and was looking at Similar Artists for some other artist I like, and thought the name Better Than Ezra sounded interesting. So I downloaded some of Yahoo's song snippets, and the rest is history. However, in order to get all the albums I had to import them from the US - "Closer" took 3 months to arrive, but it was worth the wait. The title track was worth the purchase alone and is still my favourite BTE song.

When I tell people in Ireland who my favourite (that's how we spell it here) bands are; they all respond with "who?" and a startled look. So, who are my favourite bands/artists then? BTE obviously, Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, Reindeer Section, Mic Christopher, Jesse Malin, Chris Cornell (especially Euphoria Morning), Damien Rice, The Frames, Bell X1, Sigur Rós, Polyphonic Spree, I could go on forever. Any of the artists there you haven't heard of, check them out, okay?

Unfortunately I haven't seen Better Than Ezra live yet, but hopefully someday I can get the cash to go to see BTE and DMB in one great American adventure. Luckily through the help of some Message Board members, especially Franchise712, I have got into the whole bootleg scene. I even have a 3-Disc Rarities Bootleg (compiled by a U.S. Ezralite friend), which I'm very proud of. My favourite Bootleg is Live At the LA House of Blues - October 5th 2002. My favourite live track is "Live Again," covers are Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London," and Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." And my favourite album is a toss up between "Friction Baby" and "Closer."

Everything about my BTE addiction has been good so far, except one thing. They have lost me five Euro! I went to the shop, and on my way I was listening to the Live at Northern Lights Bootleg (the one the day before St. Patrick's Day 2003), and when I got to the checkout in the shop I realised I had lost my money on the way up. It was because I had taken my CD Player out of my pocket to turn it up, and it took the money with it, and now some kid probably has it horded away until 2016. So until then, I'll still be loving BTE. Even after then I'd say. Hopefully they'll still be playing and will be on their 12th album...
