Page 16 HAVE YOU SEEN THE MAP OF EZRA? HAVE YOU SEEN THE TTOY HALL OF FAME? MISSED EARLIER EDITIONS OF THE SERENADE? |
BTE PLAYS "DANCIN' IN THE (ADJACENT) DISTRICT" The day finally arrived! July 10, 2003. Not only would I get the pleasure of meeting RandallJ and his friend Jason, but I would also get to see Better Than Ezra after waiting 11 grueling months. We arrived at The Coliseum field (home of the Tennessee Titans) just before Cowboy Mouth would grace us with their presence on stage. I'm not a CM fan but was thrilled when I realized they pulled up Trent to be their guest drummer. Trent is the 5 year old son of a friend. He was really pounding away on the drums! I think one day he'll be a rock star and we can all say we saw him when he got his start! After an hour or so of Cowboy Mouth, Better Than Ezra took the stage. They opened with "Recognize" and got the crowd rockin'. Followed by "Misunderstood." As usual, Kevin tells us they're going to play a new song and break into "Good" (I'm sure some of the hardcore fans knew it would be Good but I was secretly hoping it would really BE a new song). The set list was pretty normal for what they've been doing at the festival shows. They included covers of "Don't Fear the Reaper" (Blue Oyster Cult), "Ms. Jackson" and "The Whole World" (Outkast), "Debra" (Beck) during "King of New Orleans," "Sedated" (The Ramones), Fred from Cowboy Mouth came out and sang "R3wind" with the boys, which was a treat for me. I'd never seen Cowboy Mouth and had only heard "R3wind" once so I was pretty happy. Now it's time for them to play "Rosealia." It's all routine, Jim Payne jamming away. For some reason, Kevin goes into this diatribe of being around a campfire and listening to Neil Young (the whole harmonica thing and Jim Payne). He said this was the part where you would be dancing naked around the campfire and pretty much blitzed out of your mind. It was hilarious! |
"A Lifetime" follows and Kevin again starts talking. This time he says what an amazing freestyle rapper Tom is! He then proceeds to talk about the venue changing for Dancin' in the District. He said it should be called, "Dancin' in the Adjacent District!" He said that the city raised the prices on the previous venue and how we should all remember to vote. He then said Tom could move to Nashville and run for mayor. He then proceeds to tell us how D minor is a sad chord and play At the Stars. The show was ended with "Sincerely, Me" and "Desperately Wanting." I thought we wouldn't get an audience participation song but lo and behold, Kevin always has a trick up his sleeve. While playing "Desperately Wanting," he asked if anyone knew the song. He proceeded to pull up Jeff and make sure he could play. Usual banter goes on with Kevin deciding that if Jeff makes it big, he'll change his name to Geoff Jaguar and makes a John Mellencamp reference. All in all, it was a fun show! I got to meet some cool people that I consider true friends. I can't wait for next summer!!
Thank you so much for the review, Robin. Hopefully you won't have to wait another 11 months before your next show! Note: For some cool pics of the event, check out the concert series website gallery, here. |
