BTE ROCKS THE RIVER: Picture an intimate venue on the great Mississippi
river, warm southern breezes, and the great city of Memphis as the
backdrop to it all. Now picture friends having a fantastic time, and
magnificent music as the night’s soundtrack. That beautiful picture you
see in your mind’s eye is what everyone attending Memphis Jam 2003
experienced.
The evening started out on a rocky note as my friend Jodi and I unluckily picked Mr. "I’m A. Rude Police Officer’s" line. We promptly had to hike back to our cars and put away our cameras away. I will omit the few choice words I have for that man, for the sake of this being a public newsletter with readers of all ages! Luckily, our walk back to the car was a good steam releaser, so upon our return to the venue we were in a better mood, although we did avoid that same policeman’s line and shot him some dirty looks! Anyway, we finally got into the venue and saw many fellow message board Ezralites. It was great seeing familiar faces and meeting some people for the first time. My husband had saved us wonderful 5th row middle seats and we had an awesome viewing spot.
We were all impressed that
the show started promptly at 6:05. Retrospect took the stage
first and they were wonderful as usual. Next up was Pete Schmidt,
a truly cool guy (he signed some stuff for Jodi after the show) who
makes great music. Then came Cowboy Mouth who (of course) wore
the crowd out with their usual high-energy show.

Finally it was time for BTE. The lights dimmed and the guys walked on stage as the crowd jumped to their feet. The band did a splendid show as usual. It was packed full of get-up-and-go and the sound quality was awesome for an outdoor show. The guys were in grand moods. It was especially nice to see the audience participation brought back. Guest guitarist Jeremy was incredible and added a stunning solo performance of "Sweet Child of Mine." The whole amphitheater went nuts, as Kevin did his Axl Rose impersonation and Jeremy rocked out... Another highlight of the show was when Cowboy Mouth’s John Thomas Griffin came out to play with the guys. As Kevin was trying to get getting everyone to stop on cue, JTG didn't stop soon enough. KG then promptly told him "John Thomas Griffith, you f*cked up! You're getting all Jerry Lee Lewis on me!" Sheepishly, JTG grinned and the crowed cracked up just a hilarious moment.
Sadly, there was no encore because the show was on a tight schedule and had to be done by 11:00pm. The lively, fantastic show made up for it though. I left totally satisfied and my strawberry shake at "Steak and Shake" afterwards was a great reward for my vocal cords sore from all that singing and woohoo-ing. All in all it was a magnificent and memorable night that many Ezralites will not forget for a long long time.
Here's the complete setlist for the show. For many more excellent photos of this and many other rock shows, please visit one of the coolest sites on the web.
