BTE IN THE BAY AREA (SLIM'S)
(San Francisco, CA, August 10th, 2003)
by ChrisK

The San Francisco show opened up with Canadian band Dakona. Apparently, the Dakona guys ran into quite a bit of unexpected traffic getting over the bridge into San Francisco, so they had to do a late sound check behind a screen as the eager crowd listened. They emerged a little while later to officially start the show. Ryan, their singer, mentioned that one of the first guitar licks he learned was "Desperately Wanting" and proceeded to play the first few bars. He said he would play more, but he would prefer to stay on tour with BTE. Dakona continued to get a well-deserved, positive response from the crowds night after night at the West Coast dates.

Better Than Ezra took the stage and opened up with "Recognize" which got the crowd excited. Kevin messed up the lyrics in the second verse and a few Ezralites gave him some grief over. Next up was "Misunderstood" and Kevin introduced the band as Widespread Panic. He also thanked the crowd for missing "Sex and the City" and coming to see the show instead. Next up was a new song called "Good" followed by "Rolling" and "Live Again." Kevin asked if anybody in the crowd had been to any of the previous West Coast shows and apologized for messing up the lyrics to "Recognize" at so many of the dates. He said we should hope he messes up the lyrics, rather than get them right. At least that way the audience knows he's not lip synching!

Next up was "Special" which the crowd really got into. It's a new song for those of us on the West Coast and we’d never seen it performed live. The crowd was very receptive to the song and it got a solid response at the end. Kevin then had Jim play a Neil Young song and said that Jim was so good that he could go solo. "Get You In" followed and they mentioned they also performed it for the live CD/DVD that will be out in November. Next on the setlist were "Extra Ordinary," "King of New Orleans" and "R3wind," which also got a great response from the crowd. "Under You" was next and again was mentioned regarding the live CD/DVD. They said they are always surprised when fans get behind a song that wasn't necessarily a single or one that they played a lot in concert.

Kevin gave serious thanks to their road crew of Mike, Kenny and Bryan for doing a great job every single night. He mentioned that he saw Uncle Mike eat Cornflakes and Red Bull for breakfast and that was going to be the title of their next album. He then started playing a weird, techno-jazz song he was making up and the rest of the band joined in the improv. Kevin assured us that was the direction they were going to take for the "Cornflakes and Red Bull" album. "A Lifetime" was the next song, followed by a brief "Waxing or Waning" that led right into "Sincerely, Me" instead of the usual "Sedated" intro.

As KG started playing the intro to "Desperately Wanting," the last song of the first part of the show, he recounted a story about going to Boz Scaggs' (the owner of the venue) house when he was younger to try to get tickets to a sold out Soul Asylum show at Slim's. Check out an audio clip here.

As the guys emerged for an encore, Travis told a story about seeing the band in San Francisco soon after "Good" was a huge smash. He mentioned that it was great to see his friends be successful, and he had no idea that he would wind up in the band just a few years later.

The encore officially started with "Daylight," which, again, the crowd loved. KG talked about Travis' grandfather playing the tambourine intro to "Daylight" backstage. Travis' grandfather may be incontinent, he said, but he can still "play the f**k out of a tambourine!" The show concldued with "At the Stars." Undfortunately "In the Blood" was on the setlist, but was skipped, most likely due to time constraints. It was weird, but kind of nice, to see them end with "At the Stars" and just say thank you and walk offstage. Nevertheless, it was another great BTE show.

Chris is the Serenade's "Left Coast" Staffer and he does a fine job.  Cheers!
