FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Welcome to the fourth edition of the STREET SERENADE. Once again, thanks go out to all the great people who contributed to this edition. Contributions are encouraged from any and all fans. Please let us know if you would like to contribute to the upcoming November edition.

On Hitting the Road...

One abiding feature of BTE fans is that they tend to travel to see the band at a lot of different venues. OK, so we’re not quite Deadheads, but I think we’re a pretty mobile bunch. You may ask, why road trip? Aren’t all BTE shows basically the same? Well, no, they’re absolutely not. If you’ve been to shows around the country or listened to recordings from various venues, you know exactly what I mean...

Consider shows in the band’s hometown of New Orleans. I’m no expert, but to me shows in the "Big Easy" have a whole different vibe. The presence of a horn section (Messrs. Mullins, Lucero et al) adds a whole other dimension to the BTE experience. And chances are you’ll get to hear a song like "Use Me" in the set... But even without horns, New Orleans shows are more spontaneous and funky than in other places.

... Except Baton Rouge, that is. The guys always seem to relive some of their misspent youths when they play the Varsity Theatre and other Chemical City venues. Check out some of the Baton Rouge recordings circulating among fans and you'll hear older songs, random covers and impressions, and classic stories of the guys' days at LSU (if you don’t believe me, check out this edition’s sound clips).

Then there’s the classic East Coast venues. The guys often call Washington, D.C.s fabled 9:30 Club their favorite venue. You can tell they just love to play there. They play the venue as if they’ve been shot out of a cannon. And let’s not forget that groovy subterranean bar where the guys hang out after the show.

Irving Plaza is a great venue too. New York City audiences are really taking to the guys and they’ve recently sold out shows there on week nights. Philadelphia’s Trocadero is also a favorite BTE venue. Few attendees will forget the infamous August 12, 2000 show with the Rustic Overtones. And when the guys venture into Boston’s Avalon ballroom, you’re likely to hear covers of Boston bands and hear about how the guys spent a summer in Boston back in day.

We all know that no matter where you see BTE, you are guaranteed a far above average concert experience. But if you take a chance and hit the road, you’re probably going to realize that there’s a whole lot more of BTE out there for you to discover...

Cheers,

EnglishDave

DVD MANIA:
BTE FILMS DVD FOOTAGE AT NOLA HOUSE OF BLUES

It's all over now except for the editing, but BTE did indeed film their DVD footage at New Orleans House of Blues on Decatur Street on August 1st and 2nd.  The SERENADE is able to bring you a review of the second night's festivities, some very special photos from the event, and the winning Fan Cam essays.

THE SATURDAY DVD SHOW
by Tulaine Elaine

Friday night’s show left me wanting even more BTE, so I was so glad there was still the Saturday show to come. After scarfing down those delicious chicken tenders at the House of Blues (I just loved the honey mustard sauce!), I ran outside to take my place in the "dinner line..."

It was hot and humid night, but we were so grateful it didn’t rain while we waited. I met that evening’s fancam guy, Martin. What a character! We all wished we were him – getting to meet all the fabulous Ezralites, hanging with the guys, and filming anything and everything. Ezralites were all around me on the line – my girl Stacy, Beth, Tiffany, Ashley, Trinity, Angela, Iman, Jessica & friends, Kevdog357 & friends, Andrea & Kathy from Little Rock with their awesome props (you might get to see Kathy swinging a soap on a rope, or see Andrea holding up a red sign that shouts "con fuego baby!" in the DVD!), Anthony, Everett, Amy, and of course my damie Holly who joined us later in the evening.

Fans Get into the Festive DVD Spirit

After being heckled by disgruntled security guard 297 (with whom we later had what felt like a free therapy session, which he seemed to need) we finally were let in at 8pm, not a minute earlier- and rushed to the front by the stage. I then met April, Rob, and Corey who passed the time by pontificating on the state of being "Hootie" or "the Blowfish." Evidently, Hootie and the Blowfish are not actual people, but a state of being! My "Hootie" is different from your "Hootie", and its up to you to determine if it’s better to be "the Blowfish." I digress... (Story continued on page 2).
