 Say Hello to Sarah
(Photo: Sarah).

Name:  Sarah W.
Location:  St. Louis, Mo.
Age:  22.
Occupation:  Journalism Student.
Favorite CDs:
How Does Your Garden Grow? (BTE) and Bringing Down The Horse (The Wallflowers)
Favorite Song:
Misunderstood (BTE) and
Curbside Prophet (Jason Mraz)
BTE Shows:  6

How and when did you become a BTE fan?
Summer of '02. I heard "Extraordinary" on the radio and liked it, but never bought the CD it was on.  I heard "Misunderstood" on the radio later on, and loved it so much I decided to buy "Closer."  When I bought it I couldn't stop listening to it, so I went to the Better Than Ezra website and found out they were going to be in town in less than a week. Once I saw them live I fell in love with 'em, and the rest is history!

Where was your most memorable live show, and why was it so good (uh-huh)?
Hehe, my most memorable show has to be the XMAS '03 show, on December 20th.  I got to meet TONS of great Ezralites and see friendly ones that I had already met.  I got to meet Kev for the first time, and it was my first time in New Orleans.

What's the best live BTE song? And your favorite cover?
My favorite live song is "Live Again," with "King of New Orleans" as a close second. Kevin just sings it with such emotion it gets me every time.  And my favorite cover is "Use Me." Although I have never heard it live, I still request it every concert I go to.

Are you a bootleg collector? What's your favorite?
Not really, but I love all of the live recordings that I have!  Some of my BTE friends sent me some recordings that I love to listen to.

Which BTE opening band would you recommend and why?
I have only seen two opening bands for them, but Kill Hannah definitely rocked!  I bought their CD, and a sample CD that they passed around.  They definitely would be worth seeing if it was just them alone.  And I love crazy looking guys!

Been on any outrageous road trips?
When I went to New Orleans for the XMAS shows of '03, haha.  It wasn't driving, but it was worse! I was stuck in an airport for 19 hours because I booked my plane on the wrong day! Believe me, I met some "interesting" people in the airport to talk to. When I finally got there though, at almost 12 midnight, I had SO much fun.

Do you hang with other Ezralites?
Yep. Tori and I have been to a couple of non-BTE concerts together and we have all been known to congregate at RandallJ's house to party after concerts.  But there are too many to count to name them all.

What other bands do you really like?
Jason Mraz, The Wallflowers, Maroon 5, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ben Folds, and too many more to name.

Anything else you'd like to share with your fellow Ezralites?
I LOVE YOU ALL! And don't talk to security guards.  And try to go to as many concerts as you can. And may you love BTE forever!

A Column by Pauly, an Australian Ezralite

Greetings Ezralites, thank you for checking out this column! My name is Pauly, an Australian Ezralite, and I'm reporting from a place way down, where the toilet water runs backwards... The Southern Hemisphere... Gold Coast, Australia.

I’m writing this column because I really wanted to help out with the Serenade. Your editor, EnglishDave, thought some of you beautiful folk might find it interesting to hear what’s going on in Australia. I'll be doing my best to shine a spotlight on some relatively unknown or rising Aussie artists in the chance that some of you might dig them as much as I do.  This column features up and comers, TheRedSunBand.

Also, if I feel the need, I'll give "big ups" to whatever else I'm ecstatic over at the time... other than BTE of course!  This time, I'm giving you my thoughts on the new Velvet Revolver CD, "Contraband."

Respect,

Pauly

ARTIST REVIEW:  TheRedSunBand

Sarah - vocals, guitar
John - drums, vocals
Liz - organ, tambourine

Status: Underground / Rising
Origin: Sydney, Australia

TheRedSunBand

If you were to spend 6 months in a single room, with nothing but a bed, a guitar, the essential food and beverage, and a mind full of memories, chances are you'd walk out with something resembling TheRedSunBand. And if you enjoy the kind of tunes that soundtrack a night spent sprawled over the couch and/or floor, exchanging stories with a few close companions, lava lamps casting barely enough light to see the person next to you, and nothing in particular you have to stay sober for, chances are you'll enjoy TheRedSunBand.

Originally meeting in Pre-School in 1986, then separated for 14 years, Sarah (vocals, guitar) & John (drums vocals) were reunited at a share house in Arncliffe, just south of Sydney. Shortly after, the pair began writing and indulging their musical ideas together. After a few shows at their Uni (from which they soon dropped out), and local parties under their belt (with Sarah on bass, and John on guitar), they began experimenting with instrument swapping, and a 3rd member. After a few had come and gone, and the role was eventually landed by Liz, filling out the sound with some organ and tambourine parts wherever needed. Sarah is blessed with one of the most naturally beautiful voices I've ever heard. Unbelievably peaceful and calming, and John's harmonies compliment the music like a top shelf Red' to your favourite dish of pasta.

Since mid 2003 the band has recorded and released 2 singles independently, made videos for each (which you can view on their website), and done a couple of national tours including both headline and supporting shows. Their current single "sleep forever" has been enjoying some airplay on Triple J and the group's fan base is growing rapidly, as they have discovered first hand on their recent tours. They have also recorded a full length album, which be released in Australia on August 9, 2004. You can preview 3 of their songs in full on their website. For international purchase enquiries you'd be best to contact the band via their website.

ALBUM REVIEW:
Velvet Revolver, Contraband

Once upon a time there was a band called Guns N' Roses... They became without a doubt the biggest band in the world on their '91-'92 world tour, and are the creators of one of the most undeniably kick-arse rock albums in the history of music "Appetite for Destruction." Since vocalist Axl Rose began losing his marbles (beyond benefit) around 1995, the rest of the band went their separate ways and made a few cool solo records, did some sessions, and basically stayed out of the spotlight.

Jump forward to 8 years later when the guts of the band (Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum) decide to get off their lazy arses and form a new band, bringing onboard Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland, and ex-Suicidal Tendencies axeman Dave Kushner to complete the allstar line-up for Velvet Revolver.

Gunners fans have all been hoping – waiting – but unconsciously expecting some portion of disappointment with the result, but I think GnR fans will agree this album lives up to most, if not all expectations.

It’s definitely one of the most interesting releases of recent times if you ask me. It's back to basics in many ways, but still marking new territory in the world of rock 'n' roll. Scott's melodies and phrasings are like no other vocalist around today. His unique pop sensibilities, and tonal diversity really separates Velvet Revolver from being "Gunners without Axl." His lyrics on this record deal very openly with his recent and over-publicized drug problems / marital problems, and you can hear the honesty and conviction of his passion on the record. Maybe I'm biased, having grown up with Slash as a mentor.. but he is definitely one of the most recognizable guitarists of all time. Songs like "Superhuman," "Loving the Alien" and "Set me free" are perfect examples of Slash's raw aggression and originality on this album. In my opinion, Contraband is all killer, no filler! Awesome.
