WHO'S THAT GIRL?
BTE FAN REACHES THE
100 SHOW MILESTONE
by EnglishDave

Can you imagine seeing BTE one hundred times? Many of us would like to see the band so many times, but few of us will likely pull off such a feat. So who is that girl?

Her name is Stacy. And, she will be celebrating her 100th BTE show at the Paradise Club in Boston on March 5th. After so many shows all over the country, you’ve probably at least seen or maybe even met her (even if you couldn’t recall her name).

I’ve known Stacy for quite a few years now. The first time I remember seeing her was at the front of the line waiting to enter the Webster Theatre in Hartford, CT. The first time I actually got to chat with her was at a May 2000 show at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. That show got a bit rowdy, but under no circumstances was Stacy going to lose that coveted front row spot!

Stacy soon became a tremendous Ezra-resource for me and later, a good friend. We always run into each other at shows and have shared a few rides. One particular trip I remember was when she, her mother (yes, Stacy’s Mom), attended a 2001 show at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. The three of us actually almost got thrown out of the venue that night! (Note to self – think twice before following a certain band member’s advice to "rush the stage" ever again).

Anyway, to mark this auspicious occasion, the Serenade thought it would be fun to ask Stacy some questions about her concert-going and road tripping experiences. The Serenade also asked some of Stacy’s pals for a few words about her...

Stacy, how did you first get into BTE?
When I was in high school, I borrowed a friend's Deluxe CD - must have been sometime in 1996? I didn't really listen to it much, as I only borrowed it for "Good" but then the following July, I decided to see them as a birthday present to myself, just for the heck of it. Holy crap! By the time I left the show, it certainly wasn't ever going to be "just for the heck of it" again! That was the first time I met Kevin, Tom and Travis, so not only was I shocked by their performance, but also by how friendly and gracious they were towards their fans.

Stacy is truly one of my best friends. We met by chance at a BTE show (of course!) in 1999. And it's been nothing but great times since then. I  can't thank Stacy enough for just being a great friend. -- Alana

What made you decide on your taking your first road trip and where did you go?
Although I went to Atlanta, Georgia for Rockfest in '99, I don't consider it my first BTE road trip because even though they were the catalyst for my going to the show, it wasn't just about them.

However, the trip that I consider to be THE first road trip, because it was the first one that was entirely for Better Than Ezra. In September of 1999 my friend Abbie and I traveled around the Northeast seeing many BTE shows in a week and a half. Anyone who has seen BTE before can

attest to the almost euphoric feeling of happiness that overrides you. Well, as Atlantic City was supposed to be our final stop we had this awful feeling of sadness at our good times coming to an end. So, naturally, we didn't stop!

Completely spur of the moment, we decided to make the trek to Cleveland, Ohio for the next night's show. With the help of a complete stranger (Alana, now one of my best friends) and a newly purchased atlas, we completed what I consider to be my first road trip.

I met Stacy in 2001, first at the Trocadero, then at the Tradewinds. We became friends as we saw each other more.  I just cant say enough good things about her. She is generous, honest, caring, fun, funny, sappy, dorky, nerdy, cool, outgoing, adventurous, and one damn good friend. Favorite memories? Sleeping in the "dungeon" until 3:30pm, green bean casserole, DVD shows, Xmas shows, being drunk in NOLA (like i remember that...), crying during "Live Again" the Jeep, road tripping with Alana to get to NH, being rained out on Penns Landing & going to Hooters, sharing a love of bass players, going through mountains of pics at 3 am laughing our asses off, the BTE pumpkin... -- Tulaine Elaine

What was your longest road trip?
In the Fall of 2002, I left my home in New Hampshire for a flight from Boston's Logan Airport that took me to Portland (Oregon). From Portland I road-tripped with Alana and Kristi (jellyfishgirl67) to Seattle. After these two shows, I returned to Boston and then drove with my friend Beth to Denver (Colorado), Omaha (Nebraska), Fayetteville (Arkansas), Memphis (Tennessee), Tulsa (Oklahoma), Lawrence (Kansas), Lincoln (Nebraska), Ruston (Louisiana) and Fort Worth (Texas) before returning home. When all was said and done, in fifteen days, I had flown 6,163 miles and driven 7,471, seeing a total of 11 shows. That is definitely my longest road trip!

100 shows???!!! I think that may rank up there wish Trisha (95-98) who used to hold the record. I think that Stacy may take the medal now. We may have to pull her on stage...hmmm wonder if she would like that?

I wish that all of our fans were as nice and considerate to us as she is.  She tells me that we helped her through a rough time, but I think she did it all by herself. She's a smart cookie.

Who are some of your road trip buddies?
I owe much of my Ezra-mile companionship to BTE message board members Alana and Elaine and my mom who has accompanied me many times, as have my friends Abbie, Beth and Linda. And, although I haven't traveled with them too often, Tanya and Evelyn, both message board members from Minnesota are involved in some of my best road trip memories. Oh, and of course there's this kind of tall English bloke...

Were any of your trips particularly memorable? (Musically or otherwise).
Hmm, there are very few shows or trips that don't stand out as being amazingly memorable, but one of the coolest trips was a couple of years ago when I brought my father, step-mother and little brother to a show. We went to the venue early around sound check time, as I had asked Tom if we could hang around so my brother could meet them, and he said that was fine.

I had met the guys many times at this point, so I knew what great guys they are to their fans, but seeing how they treated my brother that night made me love them even more! The guys not only introduced themselves to my brother and shook his hand, they hung around and signed a bunch of things for him, and then took pictures with him – even Jim. Then, to top it off, during the show Kevin came over to my brother and shook his hand, Tom kept smiling at him, and when the show ended Travis gave him a drumstick. I was able to get him the set list, and their former road manager Bill gave him a guitar pick. Of course I brought my brother to the show knowing that it would be a special night for him, but I had no idea just how special the guys would make it. Undoubtedly, it is one of my best memories, and shows why I am proud to be a fan of such nice guys.

Is there one show stands out as the best you’ve seen?
The Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, August 12, 2000. I’m not quite sure what it was about this particular show, but they just tore the place up. Then, they somehow amazingly kicked it up a notch by doing this excellent cover of "Use Me" with their opening band, the Rustic Overtones. The guys definitely gave it their all and were up there having tons of fun.

And, ANY show in New Orleans is amazing, always at the top of my list – high energy, seldom heard songs, crazy covers and often the unveiling of new songs. Definitely the place to see BTE!

Of all the shows you’ve been to, what stands out as the coolest venue(s)?
I'm definitely partial to any of the House of Blues that I have been to, just because the sound is almost always top notch compared to other venues. But, as far as character goes, I would have to go with Tipitina's Uptown, and a lot of the East Coast venues – the 9:30 Club (Washington, DC), The Avalon (Boston), Lupo's (Providence, Rhode Island) and the Norva (Norfolk, Virginia).

Can you recall the worst thing you’ve seen at a show?
Rod Ryan! No offense to the man, but this (former) New Orleans’ DJ frightened me. A lot.

Did you encounter any particularly weird things on your travels?
Of course, there are those moments that can ONLY happen on a BTE road trip. Only on a BTE road trip would you see a man, his entire body completely covered and unrecognizable, hidden behind a ski mask and numerous garbage bags, with a few computer cords that literally tied the "outfit" together! It was horror movie scary!

Then there was this one time I was in a New York State Thruway rest area. To keep the story rated "G," let's just say that thanks to the man in the vehicle next to mine, I now know there are certain things that just aren't okay to do alone behind the wheel if you don't want the cops to arrest you!

Stacy and I are both from New Hampshire, but we first met, not in New England, but New Orleans. To date, we have been to shows in New England together, but have never, ever, met up in NH. We always say we will, and then never do. So close, yet so far!

I think that the first time we met in NOLA 2002, she had no idea who "Caitlin" was, but somehow (eventually) figured out that I was that other NH Ezralite! -- Caitlin (aka VioletteFay)

Are there any road trips left that you still hope to make?
Right now I have a few places I'd like to cross off my list – North Carolina, Mississippi, Chicago, and Athens, GA. I wouldn't mind a show in Hawaii either! But, the road trip I am really holding my breath for wouldn't be much of a roadtrip at all. It's been almost five years since BTE came to New Hampshire. That is the road trip I want to make more than any other road trip, one just down the street a bit!

Stacy was so friendly and caring when I first ever heard from her.  She befriended me and I saw my 1st BTE show ever with her by my side, she told me what to expect, where the best place to stand is (Tom's side, of course), and how much fun a show with BTE can be!!!

She made me laugh and cry and feel like a true friend. I still have every memento from that trip, pics, drumsticks, song lists, etc. and will never forget what a great weekend it was...
