THE BTE CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA PART DEUX: SATURDAY
NIGHT'S ALRIGHT After this cultural journey, the guys regrouped and started up with "Rosealia." Harkening back to the Christmas theme, the guys again ended up with the song with a slightly more cohesive "Feliz Navidad." After the song was over, KG ribbed Tom about how he was leaning on his bass. Kevin said it was one of those really scary bass player pose you’d see in a musician’s magazine. As he chuckled he added the accompanying text for the picture: "When Tom Drummond isn't on tour and drinking Jack Daniels, he's playing a Spector Bass." He then commented that the pose had actually turned him on – "It took 15 years, Tom, but you finally managed to turn me on..."
As if the crowd wasn’t already engulfed in laughter, KG went on to mention the after show. "For your $10, get a fan club membership and entry to the after show. Also included in your $10, Tom will stop by your house and do a termite inspection, Travis will stop by too inspect your joists, and Jim Payne will change your oil, but not when you want it changed – he'll just stop by and check your oil any damn time he likes..."
Kevin was truly relentless. As Travis began the beat for "At the Stars" he began a "Wild Kingdom" introduction about Travis as if he was some form of rare exotic animal. Thankfully, he stated that he was going to spare the crowd his "Crocodile Hunter" impression. Not only did the song include a "Springsteen Throw Down" but KG offered the fans some of the Boss’ classic "I’m on Fire." (Editor's Note: To hear how bad the "Crocodile Hunter" impression is, check out this edition's soundclips).
Getting back on track and kicking into ever-higher gear, the band presented "A Lifetime." As he played the opening riffs, KG leaned out to the crowd allowing them, not he, to sing the words. The response proved once again that this song is a BTE fan favorite. |
Disavowing the setlist. The guys spontaneously began to
play a portion of "Straight to Hell" by Drivin’ N Cryin.’ (Editor’s
Note: Many thanks to Ezralite Saturnine for identifying the song).
Switching gears, the guys then played another classic not heard for far
too long – "Happy Day MaMa."
The song sounded great and KG inserted a "Der Pork Und Sauerkrauten" instead of the expected "Pork Chops and Apple Sauce." Continuing to surprise just about everyone in the house, he asked for someone to come up on stage and help him out with the song. After surveying the crowd, he invited up 3 college age fans (2 guys, 1 girl). The girl could really sing and Kevin made a point of telling her that she did an excellent job. The guys, on the other hand, seemed a bit more interested in exploring the stage and aping for the crowd than singing (and that’s cool, because you’re probably only going to be up on stage once if you’re lucky, so why not enjoy it). Anyway, KG made fun of the one guy with his upturned collar who, according to Kevin" "...looked like I did in junior high in 1984." Dubbing this the "Valley Girl" look KG pondered and led the band in a cover Modern English's "I'll Stop the World and Melt with You." Feeling the 80s vibe, a very good cover of the Violent Femme's "Blister in the Sun" soon followed.
While taking a breather, the BTE version of the LSU "Fight Song" soon came out of nowhere. Again, as if reliving their college days, the guys played "This Time of Year." Although there was no guest guitarist, the stage did have a guest performer. A scantily clad young lady deftly squeezed her way in through the crowd to the front of the stage and ascended to perform a sensual dance which included not a little bit of writhing! Momentarily taken aback, the guys played on like troopers as she danced for several minutes and then left as quietly as she had appeared. But the guys were not done yet, they finished the song with a fun cover of Outkast’s "Hey Ya." Probably realizing the late hour and the upcoming acoustic after show party, the guys opted not to do a formal encore, but to conclude the night’s House of Blues show with "Desperately Wanting" including a cover of Nelly’s "Ride Wit Me." Phew. Is there more? Hey ya! (Story continued on page 6).
