A PREVIEW OF 2004 --
THE "YEAR OF EZRA"
by EnglishDave

The DVD
So, what's the current status and format of the eagerly awaited, BTE DVD filmed at the New Orleans HoB last August?

According to Tom Drummond, the DVD will be in 5.1 "Surround Sound."  It currently includes about 20 songs and the band is considering packaging the DVD with a live audio CD. As the guys want to include bonus features, the DVD may actually contain less songs if it is packaged with a live audio CD.

Tom says the whole thing looks and sounds great: "It's like you are standing in the middle of the HOB."  For a realistic feel, it won't include a a bunch of overdubs, but will actually include some mistakes.  The band was scheduled to meet on the DVD artwork prior to the Christmas break and the finished product is currently slated for a February or March release.

At a recent show, Kevin Griffin offered a few comments on what's in the mix for the DVD -- a night out on the town with BTE, special effects, and some documentary footage shot in Chicago in 2001.  Although no one knows what will finally end up in the DVD, the SERENADE did provide a link to some of the Chicago video footage in the May edition (which sadly, no longer works).

A Best of BTE CD?
Yep, that's the unconfirmed rumor.  At the recent Christmas shows several people heard that there might actually be a "Best Of" CD in the works for 2004.  A new CD, a DVD, and a "Best Of" ? Sure sounds like 2004 will be the "Year of Ezra" to me...

A KG MOVIE MOMENT
(AND ASSOCIATED TRIVIA)

by EnglishDave

After playing a high-octane version of "Rosealia" at a recent show at the venerable 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA, Kevin Griffin commented how he felt like:"... Albert Brooks in ‘Broadcast News,’ sweating my ^*=%& off" [CLIP].

In "Broadcast News," Albert Brooks plays a a news reporter who gets his big on-air break only to fail miserably (and hilariously) by "sweating like Nixon."  The movie also stars Holly Hunter and William Hurt. Check it out at your local video rental store for a good laugh.

Believe it or not, the "sweating like Nixon" is a reference to the commonly held belief that then Vice President Richard Nixon lost a critical 1960 debate to Presidential contender John F. Kennedy, not because of any substantive deficiency, but because of his excessive perspiration...

"COME TO THE SHOW"
by Everett

It It was early October 2002, the Fall with changing leaves for everybody else besides those of us stuck in Florida. I, Everett, aka E-Dawg, had embarked on a writing session fueled by few drinks and partly inspired by another Ezralite.

Anyway, you know how alcohol works. The initial buzz might send you above the clouds, but eventually, the further you plunge into its recesses, it sometimes encourages you to be a little less jolly and much more introspective. So, as the night and a few glasses of liquor went by, a few lovely (and a few not so) opportunistic and optimistic songs about love and life were born.

And so there I was at four or five in the morning... please don't be alarmed, I'm a night news editor for a national sports website, so I live the rock star life (aka funky hours) without the rock star glamour. Four or five? Heck, that means I've only been home for an hour or two if I've been working. Sheesh, the lushes probably aren't even in bed by that hour!

  "COME TO THE SHOW" (CONT'D):

Anyway. I was diggin' on "Closer," reliving the time I had spent a few weeks before on my sojourn out to Las Vegas with co-worker and fellow Ezralite Liam, where we'd both taken in Vegas for the first time and seen a House of Blues performance complete with BTE, Cowboy Mouth AND showgirls (and even Ezralites iin schoolgirl outfits).

I was reliving that high with a grin on my face, while, at the same time, contemplating the darker corners of the future of Better Than Ezra. What is life beyond Beyond going to be like? How many have no absolutely have no clue what they're missing by not being BTE fans? How do the guys feel about it? Sure, they keep a smile on their faces every night as they come out and make us feel incredible every damn time. But what is it like behind the scenes? What is the motivation that keeps these guys jacked up all the time? What do us Ezralites
use to pitch Ezravirgins to get off their booties and come get with it?

Without trying to overanalyze it to death, what you're about to absorb is result of that attempted channeling about the "live" dynamic... a little of the band with that last Red Stripe before the rooster crows, a little of that young fan (or the older one) racing for the stage with that sweaty palm holding the ticket when the doors open (or waiting with their digicam for the right "butt" shot). BTE music is a lovefest, and it rolls both ways: to the stage, and back out into the crowd from the guys, and that's what I wanted to capture. After revisiting it recently, I feel comfortable enough to share it with you per Dave's urging.

If you enjoy it just a fraction of the amount I've enjoyed this band since I first saw "Good" on MTV and fully actualized in my first live event at a horrible venue in Boynton Beach, Fla. in 2001, then I've done my job as an Ezralite.

Continue to carry the torch, brothers and sisters in Ezra love. Trekkies ain't got a a damn thing on us.

"Come to the Show"

No it's not a drug
But it's a fix nevertheless
One you can buy
But can't capture in a bottle
Pay the price won't you
Get your ticket and get in line
Cause rockin' at this show
is the ultimate prize

(CHORUS)
Come to the show
Get yourself close to the stage
Watch the faces light up
When the boys come out
And let the party begin
When the curtain goes up
And the music is made
All your cares start to fade
All your cares start to fade

Study intently what goes before you
What gives the crowds its juice
Three mofos from Louisiana
Giving it all and then some more
If you came for rhythm, came to rock
Kevin and the boys are way too hot

(CHORUS)

BRIDGE
Makin' music you know is damn good
But going unnoticed can take its toll
But you just keep your heart going
Not letting corporate gods take your soul
Cause you know the fans that serve you
Won't ever quit spreading the word

MODIFIED CHORUS
Come to the show
Get your ass on the stage
You bring the band out
And order the party to begin
See the faces light up
as the curtain goes up
Night after night you do it, do it
All over again

REPEAT

Come to the show tonight
I said come to the show
You won't be disappointed
You know it'll be worth it
Come to the show
Just come to the show
(I said come to the show)
Leave your cares behind
(l said come to the show)
Yeah see your cares
See your cares... Fade..
Away

Everett, it was great to finally meet you in New Orleans.  I know we can all find at least a little bit of ourselves -- and maybe a lot more -- in your writing.
