THE BOOTLOG: Whenever I am asked what some of my favorite BTE bootleg shows are, inevitably I will list this energetic How Does Your Garden Grow? era show near the top of my list. HDYGG was a relatively new album at this point, and the setlist reflects that fact. The show opens up with the album intro track "Je Ne M'en Souviens Pas" and leads into "Particle." Next is a quick trip back in time to the band's hit single "Good." More HYDDG material then follows with "Like It Like That." Kevin always had fun introductions for the band during "Like It Like That." On this particular night, he says "Travis Aaron McNabb - keeping it real on a Friday night, outta sight, such a delight, Aphrodit...e, and then out of the skies like a Stealth fighter, Tom Melville Drummond, laying down the fattest groove since Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, without the help of Quincy Jones." Hear the clip here. BTE's homage to Allison Foley, who lives at 7th and Avenue A, follows. Two Friction, Baby tunes with "R3wind" and "King of New Orleans" followm in short order. While Tom sheepishly comments that he was battling the flu, but he wasn't going to let that keep him from rocking New York City. Kevin then claims that this is all a set up to get sympathy from the ladies. KG then introduces "At the Stars" as their "current smash single and our foggy car window song." At this point, Kevin says that they are filming the evening's show, and that the back of the audience's heads are being filmed for posterity's sake. He then introduces "Under You" as his favorite song off of the HDYGG album. This evening, "Rosealia" is credited as being inspired after eating migas and coffee for breakfast in Austin, Texas. The song concludes with both the cover of James' "Laid," and the traditional "Rosealia" ending. This immediately gives away to a rocking version of "Pull." Kevin then tunes his guitar after "such heavy duty rocking" and explains that "Happy Day MaMa" was inspired after BTE played a frightening MTV Spring Break show. He claims the song is about waking up and assessing the previous nights events and that it's also their homage to Lou Reed and Lloyd Cole "all wrapped into one." The most memorable part of this bootleg is undoubtedly the 15:30 minute version of "This Time of Year." Kevin teases and gives props to Travis about being featured in Modern Drummer magazine, and they play a round of "Stump the Audience." Travis plays different drum beats and challenges the audience to recognize a song just from the beat. Once Kevin gets the answer, he jumps into the song on guitar and vocals which leads to some amusing versions of Tone Loc's "Wild Thing," Steve Miller Band's "Take the Money and Run" and U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday." |
The TTOY marathon
then continues with the best
Dr. Sample I have ever heard with audience
members Laura and John lending their voices for Kevin's tinkering. The
song then goes back into James Arthur Payne doing a Barry White
impression as he sings the back-up vocals and they close the song out.
You can't listen to this song without smiling by the end of it. Hear the
clip

HDYGG Era BTE Sticker As the show continues, Kevin mentions "One More Murder" was on the X-Files soundtrack and the set ends with an awesome version of "In the Blood." The encore performance consists of Kevin playing the "Peanuts" theme on piano and Kevin imitating Axl Rose as one of the Peanuts parents, then following that up with a brief cover of Prince's "1999." Griffin then says that the band was at the recent Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductions, where Curtis Mayfield was inducted. As they all worship Mayfield, the band decides to offer up their own homage to Mayfield with the "voodoo" version of "Porcelain." Before doing so, KG apologizes if it gets a little hot in the venue (and it does!).
"Live Again" then occupies the second to last slot in the encore, and the show closes with a rousing version of "Desperately Wanting." Kevin encourages everyone to jump up and down after the breakdown in "Desperately Wanting" and he challenges Tom to drive his legs through the stage when he starts jumping. All in all, this a very fun and energetic show, and definitely one worth trading for! The Setlist: Je Ne M'En Souviens Pa Many thanks to ChrisK for sharing this observations on this classic show. Most copies of the show circulating are in the B+ sound quality range, but as Chris notes, it's definitely worth tracking this one down... |
