ROAD TRIP TO BALTIMORE
by EnglishDave

Here’s another one to add to the you might be an ezralite if database: You might be an ezralite if before leaving on a road trip you run around the house muttering "...where did I put my @^%&*+# fan club laminate?!" Naturally, this trip was no exception.

This particular road trip was to take me to the free Thursday May 29th Power Plant Live show in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. And, what a show it was. The venue was an open area sandwiched between several nightclubs. Thankfully, the feared rain and thunderstorms did not materialize and everyone got to enjoy a night of great music.

Soundcheck
Diehard fans waiting by 5pm got to enjoy the soundcheck which included "Daylight," "Special," and "Extra Ordinary." Fans were aghast, however, as Jim Payne appeared on crutches, the alleged victim of a vicious shark attack in Gulf Shores, AL (M.O.M. alert folks).

Mr. Payne was not to be the only person in pain that night as ezralites were forced to endure a pre-show recording of positively frightful 80s hits including "I Died in Your Arms Tonight" by the Cutting Crew and Mr. Mister’s "Kyrie Eleison."

After a worthy performance by opening act Gavin DeGraw (see story, page X), BTE hit the stage at 9:30pm. The guys were obviously anxious to get out of the studio and back onto the road and put in a high-spirited performance. While the setlist was very similar to other recent shows, the guys peppered their performance with humorous stage banter and numerous impromptu musical highlights.

  "Jaws" Takes Center Stage
Jim’s duel with the alleged shark was, naturally, the prime topic of conversation. At one point Kevin asked Jim just how it felt when the shark sank its teeth into his leg. Jim, looking perplexed, paused and finally said: "Well, Kevin, it felt like a shark bit my leg, how do you think it felt?"

Tom and Kevin late attested to the mangled condition of Jim’s leg. Mr. Payne agreed he was in pain, but countered that: "you should all see the chunk I took out of the shark." KG then waxed philosophical about how Jim became part of the "Circle of Life" (a la Elton John). Of all the grisly ways to lose your life, he pondered, "you just never imagine you’ll end up being eaten by another mammal, do you?" At the this point Travis McNabb began pounding out the theme from "Jaws" and the whole crowd burst into laughter.

Free-Flowing Banter
The stage banter just flowed the whole night long. At one point, several scantily-clad "Bar Baltimore" waitresses came on stage with drinks for the guys between songs. As they left the stage, Kevin quipped: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Interscope recording artists T.A.T.U. - we can all go watch them make out in the DJ booth later."

Commenting on the origins of "At the Stars," Kevin said it was written after he listened to an old Loudon Wainwright III tune (AKA Rufus' Dad). He also noted that How Does Your Garden Grow was released almost 5 years ago "...but I swear it seems only like 4, Tom."

He also ventured that the band actually wrote "Extra Ordinary" for Sugar Ray 10 years ago, but that they finally decided to record it for themselves. After a little trouble with the guitar solo in "In a Little While" he explained that a discerning crowd – like this crowd – were certainly creative enough to understand that they had witnessed not an error, but musical "improvisation".

The Music
After an their tour hiatus, the guys were obviously very glad to be back on stage and played with great vigor. Tom, in particular, was grinning like the Cheshire Cat throughout most of the show. Travis was ready to rock as he took the drums wearing a CLASH t-shirt. The setlist contained no real surprises, but provided the many casual concertgoers a good snapshot of BTE’s work (continued on next page).
