ROAD TRIP TO BALTIMORE (CONT'D)

A Cool Baltimore Night and a Simple Song...
Photo: STP Matt

KG was in great spirits and even broke into an impromptu samba dance during the new rhythm section spotlight during "King of New Orleans." He seemed perplexed, however, when concertgoer repeatedly yelled for him to play that well-known BTE classic "This Time Next Year." Perhaps he was confused with the Alan Alda movie "Same Time Next Year?" Who knows...

The band provided an exceptionally spirited rendition of the new song "Special." They're playing it far harder and with far more confidence than ever before. The drum parts on this song are somewhat unusual, but are very, very good. It’s hard to describe in print, but it works! After a while, the spirit moved Kevin and Travis to engage in a musical (drums vs vocals) duel. Despite his best efforts, Kevin couldn’t top Travis this night...

An Abrupt Finish
The evening ended a tad abruptly. During "Desperately Wanting" a drunken concertgoer hurled a plastic bottle toward Kevin. Never fear, as it flew towards his face at high speed, he pulled a full-Keanu "Matrix" move and dodged it. Nicely done, sir. I'm not sure if the show ended then because of this incident (although KG kept his cool). It might have been curfew time and the setlist only had "In the Blood" to go anyway.

As an extra special treat, my friends and I almost hit a jaywalking celebrity as we tried to leave the area. A guy in a firefighter uniform jaywalked in front of our car and I said "that guy looks just like Joaquin Phoenix." It was - he’s currently filming a movie with John Travolta in Baltimore. Good job we missed him, huh? Can you imagine the headline? "Better Than Ezra Fans Maim Hollywood Star?" NOT GOOD!

OPENER GAVIN DEGRAW FUNKS UP
BALTIMORE'S INNER HARBOR
by EnglishDave

"It’s Graw as in McGraw, but with a Dog and an Edward up front instead of an Mc."
– Gavin DeGraw

Just who is Gavin DeGraw? Well, he’s a very talented guy who opened (with his band) for BTE at the recent Baltimore Power Plant Live show.

I’d previously seen Gavin and his band open for BTE alums Graham Colton. They put on a very funky and soulful show that highlights their solid musicianship and Gavin’s considerable songwriting talent. He has a wise-cracking, but charming, stage persona not unlike that of Kevin Griffin.

You can tell from Gavin’s stage banter that he and his band, much like the members of BTE, share a genuine friendship. The band includes the Gavin (vocals, keyboards and guitar), Wallflowers’ alumni Michael Ward (lead guitar), bassist Alvin "Pookie" Moody and drummer Matt Flynn.

Gavin’s debut CD "Chariot" will be out on Clive Davis’ "J Records" label as of July 22nd. Check out the band’s webpage to hear some of the band’s music and to find a tour date near you. (www.gavindegraw.com)
