COME ON, GIVE ME ONE REASON...
By Molly

BTE @ Gypsy Tea Room, Dallas, -June 14th,2003.

I love BTE.

In fact, I must love them quite a bit to stand in the mud and then have to face down my nemesis that IS the port-a-potty at the outdoor venue of Stubbs. It’s dark in there kids, but at least you can still hear the music….

Oh wait, there was no music because the Austin show was cancelled. My bad. Cursed lightning. Got to love that Mother Nature! It’s a shame, because we know the guys really wanted to play….but electrocuted band mates stink up the bus, so….bygones. Let’s proceed, shall we?

Even after standing in mud up to my ankles the night before in Austin, (in retrospect, sandals were not such a good idea) waiting for hours for a show that never happened, I still did not need anyone to give me a reason to make the drive to Dallas the next day. I already had one. New tracks, baby! Last show I was privy to was in Jackson, MS. last year, and while "Simple Song" was present, word on the street was new songs were being added to the set.

The drive from Austin to Dallas is only about three hours, so we arrived at the Gypsy Tea Room about two hours before the doors opened. Rather than sit in the car, we roamed around barefoot, in the rain, to pass the time. It was really our way of giving Mother Nature the finger, since she would not be able ruin our fun tonight. No sir, tonight’s show was INSIDE. So, SCREW YOU RAIN! (bitter, sorry). We caught a glimpse of some really cool murals painted on the side of the venue, one for BTE, which Cara promptly photographed. Then, we actually spotted Travis walking solo down the street, but he looked so relaxed and content, we decided not to run up and knock him down….but we really wanted to. J

Once in line to get in the doors, we met a couple of guys who had come over from Lubbock. It was their first BTE show, so we kept an eye on them all night to see what they thought. (They loved it by the way.) As soon as the doors opened, we bee-lined to our normal preferred place, which is right under Kevin’s nose, and stayed there all night.

Industrial Port-a-Potty: The Ezralites' Nemesis

Hometown favorite Graham Colton got their opener on, warming us up quite right. It was my first time seeing GC, and I have to say, they ROCKED. Before you knew it, BTE was up, I was singing along to "Recognize," with "Misunderstood" right behind. The new "Simple Song" was cut due to an acoustic guitar issue, but we did get "Special," "In a Little While," and "Daylight." Believe me when I tell you, "In a Little While" is going to be a favorite. The buzz on the board about all the new songs is well deserved actually, and leaves us all even more antsy about getting our hands on the new CD, which has felt like a long time coming. Kevin even commented during the set that it had been almost two years since Closer made its debut. My, how time flies.

Some other highlights…..  "Don’t Tell Me" and "Ms. Jackson" were also thrown back in the set, which was a nice surprise since I had not heard them in a while. Even though "In the Blood" was not on the written set list on the stage, they closed with that and a little "Don’t Fear the Reaper." Tom did his jumping bean action, whilst Kevin did cheerleader arms during some songs all night. Travis….well, Travis was Travis. J And then there was Jim….who is now officially, my favorite! How could he not be my favorite after wearing that crazy green trucker hat that resembles the one my dad used to mow the lawn in? (start up the lawnmower, cue banjos) It was ‘country fabulous’! Thanks for the great show guys!
