Christy Glenn of Uncle Nancy

IN STEP WITH "UNCLE NANCY"

Fans of BTE have known CJ (a.k.a Christy Glenn) for a long time, most notably as the longtime host of the premier fan Surprise website.

The SERENADE decided to have a chat with CJ about her history as a BTE fan and her new venture, the rock band known as "Uncle Nancy." The band has just released a self-titled debut 3 song CD.

CJ, when and where did you first become aware of BTE?
A long time ago...at LSU...in Baton Rouge.

Do you remember your first BTE show? What can you tell us about it?
Not exactly, but I do remember that I saw them having only heard their music once or twice, and I left thinking they put on such a great live show!

Is there any particular reason why you became such a fan of BTE?
The music and shows... plus they are all such nice guys. :)

Are you able to pick one CD as your favorite?
Hmm...Deluxe and Friction. I am very partial to all of the really old stuff (pretty obvious if you've been to my site).

You've obviously amassed quite a collection of BTE bootlegs and rarities. Got any tips for fans just starting out their collections?
Get a DAT or minidisc with a decent mic & record some shows. Then you'll have stuff to trade that's not on other people's lists.

James Lugo in Action

The BTE article archive on your website is priceless. Where did you get the voluminous content from?
HA!!! I can't answer that but I will say most anyone in the legal profession could easily get that amount of info in 1/2 hour or less if they looked in the right place. Of course, the ones I have actually clippings of are ones that I found or people sent in to be posted.

Are there any other bands that you list among your favorites?
Cowboy Mouth, Elton John. Of course my favorite band is Uncle Nancy. *GRIN*

Turning to your band "Uncle Nancy", can you tell us how you and James began your collaboration?
I had seen his ad for a bassist several times and just gave him a call.

Briefly, what sort of musical paths have each of you followed to this point?
We've both been playing music since we were kids. I think he got his first guitar when he was like 6 or 7. I started playing piano as a kid and later moved on to bass.

James, is it just me, or has anyone else commented your voice is not unlike Chris Cornell's?
I hear that. The funny part is I never listen to Soundgarden. Its just a physical similarity.

What's the story behind the "Uncle Nancy" name? I'm thinking there has to be one...
Unlike some bands *clears throat* we will tell you – or maybe we're just another bunch of M.O.M.s... Actually, I knew this lesbo girl named Nancy and she use to refer to herself as "Aunt Nancy," and every time she walked out of the room we'd go "Uncle Nancy."

How are the live shows working out? What would you say is the major difference between your live performances and the CD?
The shows are great! Live, we are heavier & louder.

Did you plan on getting a drummer who looks like Tom Drummond or is that just a coincidence?
No, but wasn't the resemblance uncanny? Unfortunately we have parted ways with Tom's west coast double at the time of this interview.

What does the immediate future hold for "Uncle Nancy"?
We have interest from major labels so we are upgrading our recording studio and making a full length CD.

Where do you see the band five years from now?
Rehab? Lol! All over the radio! :)

How can Ezralites find out more about the band, the music, and the live shows? www.UncleNancy.com - You can download MP3's there. We have some CDs for sale and also list our show dates.

You can also find me on this page of bass and guitar girls (look for Christy Glenn)And if you go to the official Spector Bass website and look hard enough in the 2nd collage on page 4 of the artist page, I am  right there in the center playing a natural-colored Spector bass. Here's the link.  The band is also mentioned here.

James is a rock vocal coach in Hollywood. Check him out at www.JamesLugo.com.

Thanks so much for talking with the SERENADE.
