A DAY WELL SPENT INDEED:
THE 4TH ANNUAL EZRA OPEN
Eastover Country Club,
February 21, 2005
by Mark Hartmann

I had to dust off my golf clubs today because it was time again to participate in the 4th Annual Ezra Open golf tournament. I took the day off from work in order to help my favorite band raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research – a day well spent, indeed.

At 9 AM, I signed in/registered at the clubhouse and received a ditty bag full of cool stuff, including an Ezra blanket. Bought raffle tickets (prizes included first class round trip Amtrak tickets to New York and Chicago, electric guitars signed by the band, and much more) and the attendant put my golf bag in my cart.

As I enjoyed breakfast pastries, a friendly hostess offered me a complimentary insulated-mug-o-delicious-coffee with an added Irish kick. I’m not usually a coffee drinker - but I was in a "wild" mood that morning! I grabbed my putter and practiced on the putting green for a little while, enjoying the beautiful New Orleans weather.

As all players were called to their golf carts, another hostess offered me a Bloody Mary - which I politely accepted.

At 10 AM sharp, the players drove their carts to their respective starting holes. Let the games begin!

(Fast forward through the actual golf game - I’d rather not discuss my score)

There appeared to be no shortage of beverages during game play. I decided to do an experiment while drinking a Red Bull. I asked the girl working the Malibu Rum table at one of the tee boxes to mix my Red Bull with one of her rum selections. After a few taste tests, I concluded that Red Bull and Malibu Mango was the right mix.

During the post-round party, there was delicious food and drinks from local restaurants. The desserts rocked, too!

While we ate, a few items were being auctioned, including an all-inclusive cruise to the Bahamas and pro golfer Kelly Gibson’s golf clubs.

I didn’t win any raffle prizes this year. However, last year I won a free train trip to New York. My wife and I traveled from New Orleans to New York City in July, stayed at a distant relative’s penthouse, and had a blast. I periodically reminded my wife that we owed it all to my being a devoted Ezralite!

Later, BTE took the stage for their acoustic performance. The setlist:

Extra Ordinary
Misunderstood
Good
At the Stars
Desperately Wanting
King of New Orleans
In the Blood (with "Reaper," starring professional golfer Kelly Gibson on the cowbell!)

During and in between songs, Kevin thanked the sponsors (the "playuz"), thanked all the past and future Presidents (in honor of the holiday), and thanked us all for helping raise over $50,000 for Multiple Sclerosis research.

According to KG, Kelly Gibson offered to show everyone his Electric Boogaloo break dancing skills IF someone had a refrigerator box to lay down. Alas, no one had a refrigerator box. Maybe next year.

It was great to meet so many wonderful people during the post-round party. Last year, I was teamed up with David, a very cool Ezralite from Michigan. I hope the event continues to grow - what a fun time for a great cause! This was my third consecutive year of playing in the Ezra Open and it gets better each time. Hope to see all of you next year!

What a great event. Congratulations to all those who attended and supported this good cause. And special thanks to Mark for reporting on the event.
