FAN PROFILE: Julie F.

The subject of this month’s fan profile is former Californian (now Washingtonian) Ezralite, JulieF.  If you've gotten your hands on the 2004 Christmas show recording, you might recall hearing Sailor Steve asking for her hand in marriage during the Fan Club party at the Parish.

Each fan profile has some basic information about the person and follow-up questions about their BTE fandom. So, without further ado, here's the skinny on Julie F.

Julie and Steve Share a Moment,
Christmas 2004
(Photo: EnglishDave).

Name:  Julie.
Location:
A sleepy town near Seattle, Washington.
Age:  31.
Occupation:  An unemployed school counselor.
Favorite CDs:  How Does Your Garden Grow?
(BTE), Carencro (Marc Broussard).
Favorite Song:  Currently, it's "Gavin's Song" by Marc Broussard.
BTE Shows:  25

How and when did you become a BTE fan?
My brother took me to see BTE at Rebelpallooza in Las Vegas in April 2000. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to take KG seriously or if I was supposed to laugh at him. I chose to laugh. He has such a great stage presence. I became a fan of their live show and then I really liked Closer when it came out. After that I started listen to the other CDs and the rest is history.

Where was your most memorable live show, and why was it so good (uh-huh)?
I’d have to say the after show party at the 2004 Christmas shows. It’s not every show you get proposed to onstage. Slim’s in San Francisco in August 2003, and Saturday’s Christmas show 2003 were great fun, as well.

What's the best live BTE song? And your favorite cover?
"
Beautiful Mistake," "A Lifetime," "Daylight," and "Use Me" is my favorite cover.

Are you a bootleg collector? What's your favorite?
I do collect bootlegs. I listen to the November 2003 Athens, GA show and May 1998 show ( I think it was Jazzfest).

What BTE song do you wish would come back?
"Long Lost."

Which BTE opening band would you recommend and why?
Dakona!! I was first introduced to Dakona when BTE played 5 West Coast dates in 5 days. Dakona opened for them all 5 nights. By the end of the roadtrip, I was just as excited to see Dakona as BTE! They have a great stage energy, the songs are good and they are cute
– what more could you ask for from an opener?

What other bands do you like?
Marc Broussard, Gavin DeGraw, Everclear, Duran Duran, the Offspring, Dakona.

Been on any outrageous road trips?
Following BTE around the west coast for 5 days was quite the adventure. Life on the road is tough, that’s for sure! And then there’s the time I flew out to see them in Athens, GA (not Greece) and on the spur of the moment, Jodi, Evelyn and I decided to drive 500 miles to see them in Monroe, LA the next night. Then we drove 500 miles back the next day to catch our flights out of Atlanta.

Do you hang with other Ezralites?
Yes, whenever I get the chance. I’ve traveled to visit Ezralites, and others have stayed with me, too. Chrisk and I used to hang out when I lived in Southern California.

Anything else you'd like to share with your fellow Ezralites?
Yes, I am super excited about the new CD coming out!

HAS A LONGTIME BTE MYTH FINALLY BEEN PUT TO REST?
by EnglishDave

 The Pink Adobe Restaurant,
Santa Fe, New Mexico
(Photo: www.thepinkadobe.com).

Has a longtime BTE myth finally been put to rest? Just maybe.  The apparent truth about the origins of the classic song "Rosealia" may have been revealed at the "True Experience" event on October 14, 2004. You may recall that Kevin Griffin frequently offers various stories about the inspiration for the song.

On this night, however, he offered up a piece of information that could be independently verified.  As he was playing "Rosealia," Kevin said that after his days at Louisiana State University (LSU), he spent some time in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  He claims he worked as a waiter at a restaurant called The Pink Adobe owned by a woman named Rosalea Murphy.  His performance as  waiter was apparently less than stellar and he wrote the song imagining Ms. Murphy to be a witch.  Hear his comments here.

According to the restaurant's website, the restaurant was indeed founded by one Rosalea Murphy in 1944.  Given all the contrary stories told about the origins of the song, this is probably as close to the truth as Ezralites are ever going to get.

Editor's note:  The "True Experience" event was an all acoustic performance featuring Kevin Griffin of BTE and Fred LeBlanc of Cowboy Mouth. It took place on the Cajun Queen Riverboat in New Orleans. Kevin and Fred took turns talking and playing their respective songs, even each others songs, and provided background as to their origins. they also played a very interesting selection of covers in amongst the comedic banter (see setlist below):
