MARDI GRAS MEMORIES (CONT'D)

The Tips Show Setlist
(Photo: Ashley)

LeBon: At this particular Mardi Gras show, I was able to get me a spot in the front row, as I wanted to see everything! The opening act was a group called The Stooges. They was a kind of jazz band full of the Mardi Gras groove. They played some original songs, and they played some covers. They played a cover of a song that I like to play for the ladies, Michael Jackson’s "Rock with You." The ladies love it and they love saying, "Peanut!" Do ya’ll got that here? Can you play it…
Bud: How about you finish the story while I look for it?
LeBon: Alrighty. Well The Stooges finished and it was time for BTE. When the crew was finished settin’ the stage, the band came a marchin’ through the audience. The audience just loved it! They was just a hootin’ and hollerin’ as the band marched through. Bassist Tom D and multi-talented Jim P were dressed in their Rat Pack black suits. Lead singer, Kevin G. was casual like with his boa, ruffled shirt, and BTE beads. And drummer Travis, no last initial needed, was in his white suit with a white hat. Man that Travis was lookin’ clean! Clean I tell ya... CLEAN! Well they started the show nice an’ funky like. They started with "Use Me."
Bud: By the great Bill Withers.
LeBon: No! No! No, son! Don’t you know nuthin’ about music? It was a cover of Bill Wither’s "Use Me."
Bud: (sighs deeply) My mistake. Please continue.

LeBon: Kevin was a whalin’ on his geetar for that there "Use Me." Then they played KONO. That stands for…
Bud: King of New Orleans
LeBon: How’d you know that?
Bud: Saw it in my crystal peanut ball.
LeBon: Uh huh. You know my great nephew writes your checks?
Bud: Please sir, continue.
LeBon: That’s more like it. Well, they had a Tikki bar set up on one side of the stage. During KONO, Kevin let the people know that they could come up for a drink if they could catch the bartender’s eye. I got really excited ‘cause they had my favorite drink!
Bud: What would that be?
LeBon: A free one!
Bud: (takes a deep breath) Go on.
LeBon:
Well, they went on to play "Misunderstood" followed by "Allison Foley". That’s Allison Fo-ley. Not Allison Fer-gu-son that lives in Metairie on River Street near that gas station burned down last summer.
Bud: Thanks for the clarification.
LeBon: Well Mark Mullins got to jamming during that song. I swear I saw the masks on the walls swayin’ with his groove. That man is talented! They cruised into "Rolling." Then they teased the crowd with a bit of the "Mardi Gras Mambo." They slowed the pace down with a song that is on their Robot album. Danggummit what was the name of that song… I was listening the other day to it. "Daylight" that was the song! Now these boys always try to come up with some way to treat their fans, and they came up with a doozy this show! They played a live version of a very rough draft of "Happy Day Mama." Rough draft like when the lyrics aren’t quite complete and you kinda mumble through some parts…
Bud:
Really?! That must have been some treat!
LeBon: It’s because they care and love. Did I mention the Tikki Bar? That bartender made sure everyone had a wet palette! I’m tellin’ you no one on that stage was wantin’ for drink! Oh yeah they threw in a bit of the Tokens’ "Lion Sleeps Tonight." Well, they played "Extra Ordinary" with some of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s "Sweet Home Alabama" thrown in.

LeBon: After that Kevin sang a bit of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by that Bonnie Tyler. You know, I tried to chat up that Bonnie once, but she said that she was holding out for someone named Hero. Lucky fella that Hero.
Bud:
I’m in hell.
LeBon:
Then they played a song about that poor girl, "Rosealia." Jim P. threw a bit of Supertramp’s "Goodbye Stranger" in the mix of that song. Then they played that "Good" song. They slowed the pace down again and played "Get You In" for the ladies! Yes sir, the ladies love "Get You In" and they love saying, "Peanut, put on that ‘Get You In’ song!" I’m tellin’ you those ladies there were a screamin’ like there were diamonds sellin’ for half price! I didn’t think that song could be topped, but ‘ol Jim P. goes and sings a snippet of Tom Jones’ "It’s Not Unusual!" I’m telling ya that Jim P. got a velvet voice! I swear if he sang anymore of that song the panties would’ve been flying all over the stage! Like a real Tom Jones show! Ever been to a Tom Jones show? That man swings his hips as if he got…
Bud: (releases delay button) So, what did they play next?
LeBon: Well, "At the Stars" with a bit of the Dead’s "Friend of the Devil" was played next. I do enjoy hearing that song live. Brings back memories of hot, sweaty summer nights…

Bud: Next they played…
LeBon: Next they got to a bit of jammin’ They let Mark and Brian loose. They got the crowed just a groovin’ with this funky vibe. Kevin got into the vibe and treated the crowd to a showing of his clucking skills.
Bud: Clucking?
LeBon: You had to be there son! Next they played the first song off of that Robot album "A Lifetime." Then they rocked the place with "Desperately Wanting." You know that song, right?
Bud: The running through the wet grass song?
LeBon: That’s right! Seems, you ain’t as dumb as you look, son! They took a bit of a break, and came back rockin’ again with "Recognize." They threw in a bit of a funkified "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode. After that they went a bit retro with Steve Miller’s "The Joker." Next, they got the audience singing all loud to the Funky Meters’ "They All Asked for You." Then, as we all know, all good things must come to an end. Those boys ended the show with that good ‘ol "In the Blood." That was it.
Bud: Well, I know you gotta go.
LeBon: I reckon I’ll head on over to Ida Mae’s home. You know she has big…
Bud: Gumbo pots. I remember.
LeBon: She has more than big gumbo pots…
Bud: Any more memories about the show before you leave?
LeBon: If I remember correctly, that show either tied or beat the record for the most utterances by Mr. Kevin G of Mother…
Bud: (releases delay button) Happy Mardi Gras Peanut!
