2004 CHRISTMAS SHOWS (CONT'D)

Travis Keeps An Eye On Jim As He "Kicks It"

Fan Club Party at the Parish (Cont'd)
Graham Colton next came out to share vocals with Kevin on a couple of cover tunes. “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure was first. It has been quite some time since BTE covered Robert Smith and company. Between them, KG and Graham just about got the lyrics right. Seizing the moment (and the mic) Graham exclaimed: “Right now this is a runaway train Ladies and Gentlemen!”

The following tune was on of the Graham Colton Band’s favorite covers, “Low” by Cracker. If you’ve ever seen them perform this tune live, you know they do it very, very well. And tonight Graham did an exceptionally fine job with the able assistance of BTE. Kevin and Graham traded-off lyrics and Jim Payne added a sizzling guitar solo which caused KG to announce to the crowd: “Holy sh*t, Jim Payne’s kickin’ it!”

You may recall that last year BTE rolled the traditional song “Feliz Navidad” into the end of “Rosealia” during the HoB Christmas shows. While that didn’t come to pass again this year, the guys did decide to offer up this cover during the Parish set.  The song soon turned into a demonstration of Mr. Payne’s linguistic abilities as he added an extended vocal solo in Spanish. Somewhere in Monroe, Louisiana, a retired High School Spanish teacher should be very, very proud.

Critics have often compared the music of the Graham Colton Band to that of Tom Petty and Graham willingly credits Petty as one of his major musical influences. So, it was not unexpected to see Graham take the stage yet again for another Petty cover. This time it was “Break Down.” Seeing Graham and Kevin on stage you can really sense the mutual respect they hold for each other.

What came next was really unexpected. With the
assistance of a few close friends (and Ezralites), “Sailor Steve” humbly took the stage to ask for
Ezralite Julie F.’s hand in marriage. This sort of thing has happened at show’s before (most recently at the Trocadero in Philadelphia), but never in such an intimate setting among so many friends.

What Is This Man Doing On Stage?
Why, It's Sailor Steve!

Did Julie accept Steve’s proposal? Absolutely. Although, KG made her repeat her affirmative answer because “you have to say ‘yes’ into the mic for it to be binding.” Her acceptance was sealed with a couple of kisses.

On a personal note, I’d like to say that I’ve known Julie for more than a few years and she’s one of the most wonderful people I’ve met. I also got to spent some time with Steve in New Orleans and he’s a super guy too. I just know they are going to be very happy together and I wish them all the best.

Fan favorite “This Time of Year” came next. Jim Payne delivered an “acoustic journey” during the song. As the song ended, Kevin mentioned how the BTE Message Board occasionally gets all “crazy and sh*t.” He dispelled any doubts as to whether or not they actually read the message board by noting (jokingly) that reading it really “makes their day.”

Yet another favorite BTE cover – “Blister in the Sun” by The Violent Femmes soon followed. Definitely getting into the spirit of the season, KG announced that everyone on the stage would take a turn singing.  Jim Payne willingly took a turn. Tom required some gentle teasing, but he too took a verse. Noting Tom’s vocal contribution, Kevin changed the chorus to “like Tom Drummond in the Sun.”

But what about Travis? Well. Mr. McNabb was very reluctant to partake in the singalong. Kevin asked Uncle Mike to “get a mic in front of Travis” which he did. Nevertheless, Travis balked: “But I don’t know the lyrics!” Kevin replied: “But that’s never stopped me!” Forced to contribute, Travis let fly with a nonsensical verse. Everyone in the Parish laughed and appreciated his efforts.

The set concluded with a cover of Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy.” Always libertine with lyrics, Kevin threw in a “hanging at da Parish” line for good measure. As the tune ended, the guys left the stage to mingle with the assembled fans. The Graham Colton Band members also put in an appearance chatting with Ezralites and kindly providing photo opportunities.

Many thanks to BTE, the Graham Colton Band, the BTE crew, Stella, and the House of blues for making the
second annual Fan Club Party a rip-roaring success. You say you want more Christmas? (more on page 6).

Greetings Ezralites!
